KAITANGATA.
Novbmbbb -i.-Ab the annual meeting of the Caledonian Sooiety the report and balance sheet were submitted and approved of. The latter showed a credit balance of £25. Mr M'Govern was elected president, Mr R. Johnson vioe-president, and Messrs A. Reid and Jotepb Shore re-elected treasurer and seoretary respectively. The games will be held on Christmas Day. Accidbnt.— An accident of a painful nature occurred at Messrs Oaird and Oglivie't flax mill on Friday morning last. A young man named T. Oliver, wot king at the wet-soutoher, somehow got bis hand on the drum, and before he could extricate nimielf his arm was in up to tbe shoulder, when the belt fortunately slipped, or the arm would have been torn off. As it was the drum had to be unscrewed and lifted up before the limb could be shitted. Dr Fitzgerald was soon in attendance, and had tbe arm fixed up, and Oliver is now doing well. No permanent injury is likely to result. Deaths —Unfortunately I have to .record two deaths tbat occurred within the last fortnight -the one that of James M. Thomson, son of Mr James W. Thomson M.H.8., a promising young man who was out off id the flower€f his youth, death resulting from typhoid fever after a short illness. Deceased was a general favourite among his associates, and will be greatly misted. The other death was that of George .Jeffries, better known as *' Jeff." He had been working at the Castle Hill line, and was a good plate-layer. Formerly— some years ago —he was employed on tbe Kaitangatal'ne. He bad been living in a tent, but Dr Fitzgerald, on becoming aware of his o >ndition, had him removed to his own home, and bestowed great care and attention on him. He was, however, too far gone to rally, and expired at about 12 p.m. on Sunday. Bowling.— More interest is now being taken in the game of bowls. A number of young players are practising for Mr Nicholson's prize (a pair of bowls). The first draw is to be played this week. The match Colonials v. Non-colonials resulted in favour of the ■ former by seven points last Saturday. President and - vioe-president played off a tie, tbe president this ti me < securing the victory by a narrow majority. An effort is being made toholda match (interclub) on Monday. tbe.9th (the Prince of Wales' Birthday). JSTbw School. The contractor for the new school i has a steff of workmen engaged and is already making a good show. When finished it will fill up a bf g gap and be an ornament to the town. Othkb Buildings.— New offices are being ereoted , for our local solicitors In Water street, and a number of private houses are also in oourse of erection Piso itobial.— A number of our anglers are very successful with tbe rod thii season Trout, perch, and flounders are very plentiful 1 believe a large number fi«h for perch without a license, and if a trout should come on— well, so much the better. Jit is only a farce stopping tbe perch fishing till late in tbe season, license or no lioanse, as fishermen are not par- ■ tieular about the nature of the'game so long as they can make a good basket Should any of your city anglers visits Kaitangata I believe they would have a good time of it and good results.
