Auckland and Orangeman were favourites. When the flag was lowered Parnell ran out in front, with Jenny, Kangaroo, and Orangeman, Orlando, and Auckland following him in that order. Parnell did not long remain at the bead of the field, and as they ran up the hill Jenny had a length's lead, Orangeman, and Kangaroo running together third seven lengths away, and Orlando and Auckland in company last. Jenny had increased her advantage to 10 lengths at the top of the hill, but coming on to the course proper Parnell decreased her lead, and was only two lengths behind her at the water jump, which was cleared by both horses in fine style, Orangeman 15 lengths away third, a length in front of Orlando, Auckland next, whilst Kangaroo was 10 lengths away and losing a good deal of ground. This was the order of the field until the top of the hill had been again reached, when Parnell was almost on even terms with Jenny, Orangeman and Orlando together third, and the latter jumping badly. In the run down the bill Jenny gained five lengths upon her nearest opponent, Parnell, but a great shout was given when the horses were at the stone wall bounding course proper, for here Parnell baulked, and this left Jenny with 15 lengths advantage of Orangeman, who was a length in front of Orlando. Passing the stand Auckland began to improve his position, and was second as the field turned on to the back of the course, where it was evi- . dent that Orangeman and Orlando were in difficulties. Auckland set out in earnest pursuit of JennyJ who was going strongly, but at the top of the hill she had 10 lengths in her favour, and aa she increased her speed coming down the hill it was plainly seen what the issue of the race was beyond doubt, and tho Puriri mare running into the straight with about 30 lengths' lead, cleared the last hurdle without blunder, and passed the post a winner amidst great cheering. Auokland finished about 20 lengths in front of Kangaroo, but as the latter did not travel the whole of the course, Orlanno was placed third. Orangeman pulled up at the top of the hill.
