CASUALTIES.

Mr J. H. Chester, while working in his claim at Round Hill on Friday afternoon got almost buried alive by a fall of earth. No one was at hand at the time, and it was 1 a,m. on Saturday before Mr Chester was able to release himself, having to use his penknife diligently in order to gain his liberty. Mr Chester is not likely to forget his experience in a hurry. — Western Star.

The Athol correspondent of the Southland Times reports with reference to the suicide of Mr Robert Dalrymple, teacher of Garston school, that from the position of the body when found it is supposed that the unfortunate man placed a small stick across the trigger of his gun, laid himself on his bed, and placing the muzzle in his mouth, discharged the gun by pressiug the stick with his feet. The shocking affair was discovered by some of the children who enme to school. Tbe teacher not appearing at opening time, they looked through the window of his room and saw the body as described. The deceased was an elderly man, and had been teacher at Garston for about nine year*. He was subjpet to attacks of melancholy, and there is no doubt that it was while suffering from one of these that he did the fatal deed. The deceased was a nephew of Mr Peter Dalrymple, of Appleby, and was a married man — his family, with the exception of one son who resides in Vincent county, being in England.

A man named John Smart was brought into Oamaru yesterday morning in an unconscious state, suffering from injuries received through being thrown from his horse and dragged by the stirrup. He was tiken to the hospital.
