UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
A ipeoial meeting of the University Council wae? held on Tuesday afternoon. Present : Hey. Vx Stuart? (chancellor), Hon. W. H. Beynolds, M.L.C, Dr Hocken, Dr Burns, Messrs J. Allen, M.H.E., J FtT.ton, M H.R., J. Robert^ (mayor), G. G Russell, J. M'Lean, K. L. Stanford, and B. B. Cargill. A letter of apology was receivpd from Mr Justice Williams, who was engaged in the Supreme Court. APPOINTMENT OF BHGISTHAB. The first business takeu up was the appointment of a registrar and librarian for tho university, in place of the la'e Mr W. H. Kensford. Forty-five application!! were received for the position, nnd thecouncil considered them iv committee, tho result being that M r Augustus Hamilton , of If apier, was appointed. THK EAREWOOD RUN. It waR resolved to fa the value of improvements on B irewood rnn, Southland, at a sum not to exceed £2500 THK ENGLISH LIBRARY. Professor Gilray wrote as follows:—" I write to* let you know that, after consideration of the needi of the university 1 brary in the Kngtish department, I am prepared, with the approval of the council, to send Home an ordrr for books in accordance witli the late Profenßor Brown's kind bequest of £100 for that purpose " It was agreed to authorise Pro'essor Qilray to expend the money as stated. SCHOOL OF MINBS Plan 3of tho proposed building for tho School of Mines were laid on the tnble, and wore referred to the Mining Committee of t.he council, the ehftUcelliT and the treasurer associated, to corisider, along with the question of site for the building. A request from a nnmbor of students to have tho rooms set apart for thfir use put. in better order and furnished was referred to the chancellor, Dr Burns, and Mr Allen for cona'derntion.
The Hufct County Council have the bailiffs in, being unable to pay the costs incurred in testing the legality of their action in erecting toll gates.
