Draughts Matches.

Dunedin v. Ghristchuboh. For some time past the principal topic of conversation among the draughts players in the city has been the telegraphic match between Dunedin and Christchurch Draughts Clubs. It was originally intended that the match should come off during the currency of the exhibition, but the wire was not obtainable, aud after further negotiation for its use 16 was decided that the contest should take place last Saturday night. The Dunedin committee lost no time In selecting a team and making final arrangements at this end. Mr Seager very kindly placed a room in the Telegraph Office ats the disposal of the committee, and it was due to his zealous attention that the matoh resulted bo successfully, one notable feature being that not a single error occurred in transmitting the games. The conditions of the match were: Eight men a side, each pair to play two games ; no game to be started after half-past 10 o'clock, play to atop at half- past 11. Uncompleted games were to be referred to some independent player to be analysed, the result to count in the score. Mr T. Dickion umpired for Christchuroh in Dunedin, and Mr Kay, sen., acted in a similar capacity for Dunedin in Ghristohurch. Punctually at 7 o'clock the play started, the local room being well filled with spectators, who evinced great interest as the various games slowly progressed. The two teams were paired as far as possible according to strength, so that the best players in either team would meet. Mr Montgomery and Mr D. Brodie had pride of position In the Dunedin team, facing Messrs Tonkin and Kay, jun. To facilitate matters, it was arranged that four of the Dunedin players should i tart with the Blacks and four with the Whites. It may be worthy of note to »tate that this is the first ' draughts matoh played by telegraph In the colony. A peculiar feature of the match is that Ohristchurcn did not score one win out of the eight finished games. It is a pity that more games could not have been played, ao as to give the losing players an opportunity to retrieve their loss, as one game is hardly a sufficient test of a player's power. The scores were as follows : —

* Games unfinished. Unfortunately the well-known players Messrs Shaw (Dunedin) and Boswell (Ohrifstchurch) did not put in appearance. J. Brodie and Osborne replaced them. The following are some of the games placed in the match :—: — Messrs K. Caldow (Dunedin) and Hawkins (Ohrlstchurch). Game 1562—" Cross." Caldow's move.
