WAIAREKA.
September I.— The members of the Waiaraka Mutual Improvement Society brought their session to a close with a social on the 30th ult. Tb.B schoolroom was most tastefully decorated for the occasion with ferns and evergreens. The words " Waiareka Mutual Improvement Society" were moat artistically done in ferns by the president, Mr Garrow. About 80 persons responded to the invitations issued by the society, tho Rev. Mr Will being in the chair. The programme opened with an overture (piano) by Miss J. Brownlee. " The Scotch Brigade " was «ung by Mr James Bain ; Mr B. Atkinson recited " MaryQueen of Scots " ; Miss A. Bain sang very Bweetly "The song that reached my heart"; Mr G. and Miss J. Brownlee sang a duet, "Brown's mistake"; Mr John Isdale gave a humorous reading which created great laughter; Mr Garrow recited the "Eve of Waterloo"; Mr Sawers sang " Scots wha hae " ; Miss Jana Brownlee brought tho concert to a close with the gem of the evening, that beautiful Bong, " Eileen Alana," and received well-merited applause. The items in the programme were contributed solely by members of the society, and tbey are to be congratulated on the manner in which they acquitted themselves. An adjournment was them made to the supper room, where the tables were laid and beautifully decorated by the ladies of the society. About 10 30 dancing commenced with the Grand March, and was kept up spiritedly until 4 am., when the siDging of " Auld lane syne" brought an enjoyable evening to a close. The muaio was supplied by Messrs Bews and Halkett (violin), and the cornet by a gentlf man friend. Miss Bolenhagen and Messrs Gardner and Brown contributed songs during the interval.
