WHEEL NOTES.

By Demon.

The Dunedin Cycling Club are to be con« gratulated upon the manner in which the race meeting on Saturday was carried out. The races were all well contested and some of the finishes were very exciting, the riders in the test races being cheered to the echo. Wood's riding was much admired. There is no doubt but that he might have left his opponents farther behind in both the test races had he started to make the pace earlier. His grand spurting at the finish gave the onlookers some idea of his powers. Brown had all his work cut out to get in front of Steadman, but on a cinder path the former should prove the better man. Messrs Fred. Wood and William Brown, and the riders from Christchurch were entertained at a smoke concert in the Coffee Palace on Monday evening by the Dunedin Cycling Olub. Mr James Allen, M.H.R., president of the club, occupied the chair, and presented the prizes to the successful competitors. Mr Allen in a neat speech said he was very pleased to see such a successful gathering on the Carisbrook ground on Saturday, and to see such distinguished riders as Wood and Brown competing. The prizes were then distributed, Messrs Wood, Brown, and Steadman being greeted with round affer round of cheering as they came forward. A number of speeches were made, and songs and recitations were given during the evening, which was spent very pleasantly. Mr Wood, in responding to the toast of " Cycling," mentioned that he would probably retire from the racing path after this year.
