Melbourne, February 8. The Government have decided to withdraw the prohibition on the importation of stock. Mr Baker has obtained £3000 damages for injuries which he sustained in the Windsor railway accident. The amount claimed was £10,000. February 8. Another action for damages arising out of the recent railway accident at Windsor is pending — a doctor, who was injured on the occasion, having instructed his solicitor to commence proceedings for the recovery of £12,000. Sydney, February 8. Peter Kemp is slightly the favourite in the sculling match with Clifford for the championship of the world and £200 a-side, which is to be rowed over the championship course on the Parramatta on the 11th inst. The Railways Management Bill, which provides that all constructed railways in the colony shall be placed xmder the control of a board of commissioners, was read a third time in the House this evening. Adelaide, February 8. Mr Joseph Smith, of the Great Western Railway Company, has been appointed chairman of the South Australian Eailway Commission at a salary of £2500 per annum. There were 50 applicants for the position. The result of the Mount Morgan appeal case has caused a rise in the shares of that company, and shares in,the jumpers' companies have fallen to nil. Peeth (W.A.). February 7. The Governor has received an additional despatch from Sir Henry Hollaad, in which he suggests that one legislative chamber is quite sufficient till the population exceeds 80,000. He also expresses a dislike to the proposed constitution, which is modelled on that of the United States and Canada. He holds that if an Upper House is created it should be nominated. Sir Henry recommends them to follow the precedent of the older colonies, and asserts that power
, ' iin * must be reserved for the Queen to proclaim a division of the present colony into two or more colonies; also that the aboriginals must be placed under the care of a body independent of Parliament, and that pen* sions must be provided for civil servants.
