Mr Skene reports under date February 7 as ollows : —
Harvest is now the leading work, and orders are coming in fast, Hand binding has had its day, and machinery is quietly taking possession of the field. Large numbers of young people are still leaving us, but the day is not far off when they will rush backagain. Wages: Harvesters, 20s, 255, and 30a; couples, £65, £70, and £75 ; blacksmiths, 30s and 40i; boys and lads, 10s to 15s; milkers, 10s, 12s, 15s, and 20s ; cooks and bakers, 2us, 255, and 30a ; grooms and gardeners, 20s ; boots and waiters, 15s and 20s.
