False Starts.
On one occasion lOfalsestarts were made upon the Doncaster Mocr before the genuine
face was run ; this was in Altissidora's year, when there were 17 runners.* An occupant of the Grand Stand after the eighth start laid 100 to 20 against the next being successful, and, upon winning that,. 100 to 30 against the tenth bringing it off. In 1819 the St. Leger was run twice, but on the matter being referred to the Jockey Club the first was ruled to. be right. Two years afterwards GustavuSj the winner of the Derby, was considered a sure card, but the victory was snatched by Jack Spigot, a North Country horse. It was the first great struggle between the northern and southern trainers, the former pooh-poohing their rivals and saying that none of their training would •ver carry off the St. Leger Stakes. Strange to relate, the northern stables now seldom win the prize ; the last th.at did so was Apology, in 1874, the winner 1 of that year's Oaks and One Thousand Guineas.
