RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE MEETING.,

Wellington, July 16.

The Wellington Racing Club's Steeplechase meeting to-day was favoured with fine weather. About 1000 were present. The course was in good order, except in one or two places where it was a little soft. The racing was excellent. and with the exception of Newman being thrown from Erebus in the Steeplechase, there were no accidents to mar the pleasure of the days sport. The judging in the Wellington Steeplechase was severely criticised, many .thinking that Mangahone had won by a head. Belle also beat Orient by a neck for third place, but t»« judge gave the position to the latter horse. I* l6 following were the results : —

TRIAL STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, Of 60sovb ; second horse lOsovs from the stake 3. Two miles and a-quarter. Mr JH Adams' Zulu, lOst ... (Alexander) I Mr & G Donnelly's Owhaoko. ISsfc ... (Hickev; » Mr C M'Kenzie's Patriot, 9sfc 91b ... (CooW ■> Maywood (lOst 71b) and Surrey (9st 101b) also ran. " i Owbaoko was a hot favourite. From a go?" start Zulu was rushed to Vh& front, and in «w

first half-mile had a 20-'lengfchs lead, Owhaoko second, and Patriot last. All fenced well, except Maywood, who baulked at a hurdle and lost all chance. Coming to the stand Zulu had a strong leadi bufc baulked at the post and rails in front of the stand. He was, however, got over at the second attempt. Owhaoko also baulked at this obstacle, and by the time he had got over Patriot had taken second place and 2ulu had increased his lead to a quarter of a mile. Owhaoko soon passed Patriot again and made a determined effort to catch the leader, bufc the Dace and his heavy weight told, and he suffered defeat from Zulu by four lengths, Patriot an indifferent third. Surrey did not finish. No time was taken. Dividend, £4 10s.

HUHDLE HANDICAP,

Of 80sov8 : second horse lOsovs from the stakes. Two miles. • Mr H Hill's Kangaroo, lOst alb (Winteringhain) 1 Mr H Lunn's Kingask, list 7lb ... (Kingan) 2 Mr J Heron's Erebus, lOsfc 31b ...{Newman) 3 Manning (lOat 21b) also ran. Kingask was the favourite. From an even start Kingask led for half a mile, when he was steadied, and passing the stand the first time all were in a cluster, and taking the fences very nicely. At the turn by the river Kangaroo drew out from the ruck and led the field by a length, Kingask being second. As they approached the road Kangaroo and Kingask drew away from the remaining two, and made a desperate race of it. The last hurdle was taken together, but in the race home down the straight Kangaroo had the most ief t in him, and he won very comfortably by a couple of lengths. Erobus a bad third. Dividend, £7 9*.

FLYING HANDICAP, Of 40sovs. Three-quarters of a mile.

Mr H Hill's Deceiver, 9sb 51b ... (Clifford) 1 Mr J Armstrong's VVairuna, 7st 121b ... (Derrett) 2 Mr B Blower's Fabrication, 7sfc 71b ... (Peters) 3 Charmer (Bst 101b) also ran. Wairuna was first favourite at even money. From a fair start Fabrication was rushed to the front and led the field to the road, when Deceiver and Wairuna closed on him and entered the straight almost abreast. Deceiver was running unkindly four lengths away, but when fairly at work Clifford brought him out, and although Derrett, ou Wairuna, made a game effort, he won rather easily by half a length. Time, lmin 24sec. Pividend, £4. WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE, Of 150sovs; second horse Idsovs from the stakes. About three miles. Mr J Bollo'e Echo, 9st 101b ... Kangaroo unseated his jockey at the first fence. The double was taken by Secretary first, then followed Mangahoue, Echo, and Erebus together, the others in a cluster, except Maywood, who was clean out of it. Going along the top of the course Secretary still led, with Echo and the favourite well up, and Belle and Orient lying fourth and fifth; then followed Victor and Mammoc. At the jump into Ward's paddock Erebus came down, and gave Newman a severe shaking. Secretary maintained the lead along by the river and also on passing the stand a second time, the order being Secretary (with a length lead), Echo next, then Mangahone, Orient, Belle, and Victor. As the horses swept round the top of the course, and entering Ward's paddock for the last time, Mangahone went to the front, followed by Echo and Orient. Secretary died away beaten, and was also passed by Mammoc and Belle. At the gorse fence by the river Echo closed on to Mangahone, and from there a great race ensued. Neither had the advantage until within a few Btrides from home, when Echo got his nose in front and won by that. Orient and Belle raced for third place, the former gaining the verdict by a head. Victor fifth, Secretary sixth, and, Maywood seventh. Time, 6min 46sec. Dividend, £11,
