(J Woodburn) 0 Betting : 15 to Bon Selby, Bto 1 agst Nightcap, 9 to 1 Radius, 10 to 1 Scotilla, and 100 to 8 Blue Grass and Stone Clink. Blue Grass was first away, but was quickly pulled back, and Scotilla, on the rails, made the running, attended by Nightcap, with Selby at the latter's heels and Blue Grass next, Radius being several lengths last. So they ran to the first turn, where Scotilla settled down with a clear lead of Nightcap, who was in turn clear of Selby, with Radius still in the rear. Shortly afterwards Selby passed Nightcap, and took second place, and no further change occurred to the mile-post, where the favourite drew to the front, and at once assumed a decided lead of Scotilla and Nightcap, with Stone Clink and Radius next. Blue Grass dropped back into the rear five furlongs from home, as did Scotilla, while Radius and Nightcap drew up to the heels of the favourite, with Blue Grass now beaten off. In this order they entered the line for home, and Radius and Nightcap stuck close to Selby until a quarter of a mile from home, when Radius cried peccavi. Thereupon Nightcap challenged in earnest, and for a short distance flattered her supporters, but the favourite shook her off at the distance, and on her retirement was left with a clear lead of Stone Clink. However, the latter proved a tough opponent, and gradually creeping up, she closed with the favourite fifty yards from home, and, amidst great excitement, cleverly defeated him by a neck. Nightcap was third, a length and a-half off. Blue Grass was dismounted just before reaching the winning-post, and came back to the paddock lame. Time, 3min. 33 l-ssec.
