ISLA BANK (SOUTHLAND)

August 29. — As a result of the fine weather wo have experienced a large part of the ground is ploughed for oats, but there is little sown yet. There will be very little wheat sown hi this dis-

trict this year.

Entertainment. — A most successful concert and ball was held in aid of the funds of the local hall last week. Mr John Templeton presided. The various performers were heartily applauded, and a lady visitor from Invercargill (Mrs Nicol) received a special meed of commendation. Dancing was kept up till sunrise, refreshments being liberally supplied, and a thoroughly enjoyable night was spent.

Roads. — A meeting was held recently to consider the advisability of merging the local road boards into the county. All the bodies interested except bhe last named were represented, but the meeting closed without any definite conclusion being arrived at. Charges of gross mismanagement on the' part of the road boards were made by the various speakers, but as similar charges were hurled against the county councils, these did not carry bhu weight they would have otherwise dove. During a speech advocating the merging, a member of the Wallace County Council let slip Che statement that a late member of that body had succeeded in getting £4000 spent in making a road to his own door, while other ratepayers stated that although they had been paying rates to the Southland County Council for years there had never been a penny spent for their accommodation, then- contributions being spent in other districts.
