WAIMATE STEEPLECHASE MEETING.
| The Waimate correspondent of the Ly ttelton Times gives the following account of the meeting held on Friday :—: — The meeting on Mr M. Sfcudholme'a property was a great success, the racing boing firstclass, weather magnificent, and management capital. A beautiful course had been laid off by the Ground Commilteo, and the spectators, about 800 in number, obtained an uninterrupted i view from the hills at tho back, which formed a grandstand that it would be hard to rival. There were eoveral falls during tho day, one to j J, Allen, who rod 6 Glenara ia the Consolation, ! being rather serious. To night, however, beseems [ to be getting bettor. Messrs Mason and Roberts bdd a rotalisator, and put through nearly I £000, There wto'G a large number of games of chance of all descriptions. F Little John, Glnnara, and Linwood also ran. Ravens wood and Berringfcon were Bcratchsd. This was a splendid race between the first tbrop, half a length dividing each. Linwood and King Arthur baulked, or the latter, it was thought, would have won. MA.IDE-1 PLATK, Of 40 Hova Two milee. Mr P Jones' Coryph.'i', lldt 121b .. (Owner) '1 Mr J Looioj's Hector, l?st 51b .. (C Joyce) 2 Modesty also started. Presto and Pickleß were scratched. Coryphee led throughout, and won, hard held, by 20 lengths. Hector baulked, and spoiled what promired to be a pretty race. Moody held a length lead over the last fence, and appeared to have the race in hand, when ho put his foot in a hole and stumbled, allowing Jjyford to como np. The whips wero onfc, and tlie hors93 came down tho straight together, BerriDgton leading by a bare half-length, an advantage which be main ained to thn finish. Black Doctor and Little John baulkad. (Owner) 8 Fawn, The Saracen, Little Dick, Rax, and K&rearea also ran. Them was a grand race between the firßt three, Ben H. winning by a neck. There was a difficulty in separating the second aud third. CONSOLATION. Little John, lOat .. (J Ootton) 1 ivinwood, list lOib .. .. (Ljford) 2 Glonara and Little Dick also ran. There was a splendid race between Little John and Linwood. The latter led till the turn for home, when ha seemed to stumble at the same place as Moody, Little John getting up on the ineide, and winning, after a desperate finish, by a quartar of a length Glenara came down a cropper at the double, Alien sustaining a serious fall and requiring to be removed to town. Little Dick also fell. HACK STBEPLECHASE. Karearea.. .. .. (Mr W Mlddleton) 1 The Saracen and Fawn also ran. The race caused considerable amusement, all tho horssa baulking repeatedly. Karearea eventually came in about five minutes before Fawn,
