Tbe debate on the financial proposals of the Government was brought to a clo:<o at an early boar this morning, when the division was taken with the result that the Budget was rejected by a majority of 12, notwithstanding that Mr Gladstone announced that the Government would make its acceptance a cabinet question. An amendment proposed by Sir Michael Hicks-Beach condemning the proposed increase in tbe duty on beer and spirits was then carried. In consequence of the adverse vote, the resignation of Ministers is expected. •

Mr Gladstone said that the Budget question would mean the life or death of the Government. Mr Ohilders, Chancellor of the Exchequer, charged the Tories with opposing concessions to the Colonies. Some excitement was caused during the debate by the Parnellites jumping np on their seatß and endeavouring to speak. On the division being taken the motion was carried by 264 to 252. The defeat of the Government was quite unexpected-.', - A number of Liberals abstained from voting od Sir M. Hicks-Beach's motion. The Daily News states that the Government will reßign. Tbe. A meeting of the Cabinet was held yesterday, at which it was resolved that the Ministry should resign in eonsequenoe of the defeat on the Budget, Mr Gladstone accordingly pro. oeeded at once to Balmoral and informed her Majesty the Queen of the deoision arrived ar.
