Some of the jewellery found in the possession of the ex-burglar Dunn has been identified as part of the robbery committed in February last.
Wanganui, June 10. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Mrs Adamson, of Hawera. The evidence showed that ehs had been suffering from mental derangement, and had threatened to do away with herself. A verdict that she had committed suicide by jumping into the Wanganui River on Monday night while temporarily insane was returned. The evidenco of a railway guard showed that she had intended going home to Hawera that night, but had got into the wrong train and had to come back to Wanganui.
Wellington, June 5, The purchase of tha district railways ia now definitely settled, subject to parliamentary ratification. The Waimea Plains line will, of course, be excluded, but the Rotorua and Manawatu will be included, and tbe terms are regarded by Ministers as being favourable to the ColoDy. They are sanguine th<it their proposal will prove acceptable to Parliament, but I hear a good deal ot doubt bintod on this head. However, if the proposals are to stand or fall as a whole, which, I believe, Ministers will insist upon, it is deemed probable the scheme will pass. Wellington, June 10. The tender of Messrs Campbell and Co., of Dunedin, has benn accepted for the supply of ceensoted sleepers. The number to bo sunplied is 150,000, and the contract price is £29,909. Tbe police are searching for two mksing men— F. Leardet and J. S. Harris— who were shooting game on Wairarapa Lake. Nothing has been heard of them since the 25th ult. It is feared they may have been drowned in crossing the Lake. The statements to be forwarded to polioyholders in the Government Insurance Association for and against the establishment of local boards have been issued. Chbistohoroh, June 10. At Kaiapoi 47 Maoris recorded tbeir votes in the election to day of w mocnber to represent the Southern Maori Electoral District : — Thomas Pratt polled 27 votes ; Hone T&ra Tikao, 15 ; and Hone Paratini, 5 A public meeting, held to night under the chairmanship of Mr Wyun William!*, passed a resolution in favour of the Government taking measures to facilitate the settlement of working men on the lands, and introducing cheap money in accordance with Sir J. Vogel'a scheme.
Timabd, June 10. During the trial of Lucas, for wounding his wife with intent, an extraordinary scene occurred. The prisoner averred that his wife was perjuring herself because of a hatred she had taken to him, and for the sake of " that tall Chinaman." He declared that he was not the father of his wife's child and could prove it. He pressed for an examination, but the medical men informed his Honor that the prisoner's statement could not be confirmed. The trial was then proceeded with. Trengrove, charged with assault on his wife, was found guilty, and sentenced to three years' hard labour.
