OTAGO HEADS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
* • June 8. The Weathbr.— Since writing last the weather has continued dry. Too much so indeed, as the tanK3 in the district are many of them drained. Tho AO. bo it may be dally aeon making one or more trips to Mr Walker's for water.
A HoLinAY Trip, -a number of the members of the Harbour Board paid the breakwater and the fortifi3,itlonß at Taiana Heado a visit on Batu-d»y last. Whether the outing was ene of tnuiie^s or pleasu-e. or both oomb'npd, I am uniblo to state.
Tub Breakwater —Work on tho breakwater is still being pushelahesd. The pile driving is not at all pleaßant work during sime ot tho weather experlenred. However, very considerable headway has, allowing for drawbacks, been mide wiJj this branch of the work.
The Latb Bah,.— Tho ball on the nl«ht of the 29ih u't. wa*, even allowing for a downpour of rain at an hour when many wora donning thair muslin and hvi to again dofi it, a succoss. Tho acbool funii are £3 16j tha better, with ovie retur.i not acaountad for. Ttie music was provided Mr W. itfarr, Port Chalmers, and Mr Frederick Whltaker acted taM.O. TheA.C. from Taia-oa Heads, with a few exoiotbns turned out. In fact, it it h\6 not been for them, there would have been a very thia house. A moat unwarraatod on dit went the rounds befo-e the nl ht ot the ball to tho effeot thtt our eairdtans at the heads Intended to mike themselves obnoxious at the ball. To the credit of the AO. bo it sai I, thsy, on the other hand, taught mao 7 a very salutary lesson, which it ia to b-t hoped won't ba a-'oa forgotten, gome people soem tn associate all tbat ia fash aad loo^e with the Hfe of a soldier. Why thia shoold be it Is difficult to u-iderstin*?. There are, however, peopla to-d*y whti would, If po aible, make a tanrfed Bkdn of Heaven'^ Hunbeama if nothing el«e timed ii handy A Rejected Proposal — An en'erpdalng resident of Port Chalmers some time ago paid the Kaik fishermen a visit in order, I am ioformod, to Dee if he ould not induoe them to allow him to monopolise their services nod their market. After being very bluntly talked to he bad tp return as he came. There is a body ot all-weather flahermen here who need not care for anyone. lam not to be understood a?- sayln? that all the Otago river fisbarroe:) ara equally energetic, but as an example of what may be done by steady application and attention to work I may stito tbat one party last week had something like £15 to divide amonar them. The men rf course earned what they got, for they are generally first out and last in. Tho lite of a fisherman ia very independent bub during tho winter months a very precarious one.
School Matters —The Kaik School Committee will hold its ujual quarterly meeting about the end of thia or the becrtnuing ot nex - maofih, when the yearly statement will be drawn up «nU submitted to the parents. Tho hearty thanka of the SclnolOommittoa are due to Mr F. Whltaker for hi* a'sistauce in enabling them to bring about such a successful entertainment aq tha' held on the night of the 29th ult.
Remoious. Messrs Clark and Parry still continue tiheir ministrations at the Kaik and Heads I wonder does U ever occur to either of those no doubt wellmeaning men that there is just the possibility of other people ho'dlng d'fiarent religious views from those entertained by himself, and tbat inflating their unsolicited views on one and all Is in very bad tasto, even though thuse who disagree with them have the good manners to listen to them without dissent.
