Bruce Parliamentary Union The first Bessiou of the Bruce Pjr;itmentary Union was opened on KiWay evening la-t, at 7.^0, in the Council Chambe 8 Milton Mr H. OUrk was elected Speaker of the House, after which the opening ad<lto3s was delivered by the Governor (Mr F. Wayne). Printed copieß were afterwards oirc I'ated a m.ongnt the members, so that the policy of the Government therein contained might be more leisurely co. sidered by hon. gentlemen. At tho oonclusion of the address Mr D. Reid announced that ho had formed a Ministry as follows :— D. Reid, Premier, Treasurer, and AUorney-general ; James Raid, Colonial Secret*ry and Minister for Education ; W. M'lirea, Minister for Public Works ; W. Taylo-, Minister for Lands and Immiifratii.n ; R Murray, fostmaster-general ; C King, Minister of Minos ; B L Black, Minister for Defenc > and Native Affa'ra. A number rf new members were proposed. Mr Fox (Greymouth) moved the Addresa-io roply, m au exce • lent Bpa-ch, the beau'y of which was considerably ni irred by the remarks mado by the speaker on the education question. Mr Patterson (Blueskin) seconded the motion, after which tha House was adjourned. At a caucus ot the Opposition Dr Reid was appninted to the leadership ot thst party, Luorußß. Thefiratof a series of winter entertainments arranged b,tho Blue Ribbon Association whs held in the Presbyterian Uhurch last Tuesday evening. Mr A. W. Grant doliverod an addresa upon Nelson's motto, " England expects ovory man thia day to do his duty"; after which Mr Jainea Adam delivered a l<-ctura upon " Travels In other lands," and illustrated his remarks by a series of llme-liglu views of scenery ia Italy, &c.
Concbut— An entertainment in aid of the funds of the Hainan Catholic Church was held on Saturday eveniug last, and passed of! moat successfully. The proceeds amounted to over £SO.
