VERMIN V RAIBITS.
. TO THE EDITOE.
Sir —Your leader on this subject misses the real point in my letter # regarding ferrets! &c. which is that poison is doing its work so well in killing rabbits at present that Siere is no need for the ferrets, stoats or bfcen^rtot^ry=i« - c^loS^ b SoiSe%| Slid that many pheasants, partridges, &c. would get poisoned of necessity, but resolved SSVoppnM. laying dowr i poison , as sidered the destruction of the rabbits a inoie deßii-Jilo object tfwn tho preservation of game. There iB not a work on natural history but points to the mischief these vermin do among poultry .and thero are innumerable instances where weawte have attacked man aud beast.
I have before me Mr Henderson's well-known " Life of an Angler," iv which he mentions that when a boy, he, along with other two boys, were attacked by a band of about 20 weasels, and had to fly across the holds for their lives. Near my native place, I romembor a woman being attacked by weasels, and had not someone come to the rescue sho would havo been Hlled Dogs have often been killed by them. What I wish to point out particularly is that New Zealand being the only country free from noxious animals, we ought to be very careful m what we introduce, and not be too fast in importing animals likely to bo a plague, by-and-bye, worso than rabbits.— l am, &c, PIUNGLE V. STODDART. July 31st. ,
