WINTON.

(PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) j August 2nd. •

We hare again been visited by a big flood down the Winton creek, and a large quantity of land on its banks has been under water, causing considerable ' inconvenience. Indeed, the heavy downpour we got on Saturday has put a stop to farming operations ' generally. The Oreti has not been unusually high, • although I hear that some damage has again been done to the bridge on the Heden Bush road. The election of a councillor took place in the South Wa«l of the borough yesterday, when Mr F. K. . WhiFe was opposed VMr K. Wilson. Mr White". friends came up to his support very well, and the result of the poll gave that gentleman a very substan- • tial majority^ which he deserved, having Bervcd the borough well during the timo of his being in the Council. In tho evening the statutory annual meeting of the Council was held, and the newly-elected coun- - ciliorß made the usual declarations and took their ' seats and proceeded to elect the various committee.? , and get into harness for the next twelve months' W< Before the old Council went out of office a resolu : tion was moved, seconded, and supported by all present, including his Worship the M.yor, expressing the satisfaction of the Council with the manner in which the Town Clerk had discharged his duties during the last year, and indeed during all the years that gentleman had served the Council. The resolution, couched in very kind and yet expressive lan- • truace was ordered to be entered in the minutes.
