THE MATAURA ELECTION. Invercargill, January 15th. The polling for the election of a member to represent the constituency of Mataura in the General Assembly, in place of the Hon. W. Wood, who was recently elevated to the Legislature Council, took place to-day, the candidates being Messrs Andrew Kinross and James S. Shanks. The result of the pol Hug was as follows :—
This gives Mr Shanks a majority of 39. _ One return has to came in, but m all probability it will only increase Mr Shanks' majority.
