To THE EDITOR.
August 20, 1875. Sir, — As the introduction of chess problems into your cilumns is somewhat new to the public and many of your chess* playing subscribers, may I suggest the advisability of your giving us a few problems easier of solution than those which have appeared lately, and not mo; 6 than three movers. — Tours &c, A WILLIKU SOLVEft. ■
[We &ye pleased to accede to our correspondent's proposal, and have resolved to give a few problems which will not only be easier- to solve, but positions A\h.ch frequently occur in ordinary games, and are, therefoie, useful in actual play to the shortening of the same. It is not very long ago since we were asked by a young gentleman, who had been playing chess for some ye-irs, whether it was possible for a per.-on to checkmate his advesary with Rook and King onlf against King. Doubtless our cou-espond* enfc at Lawrence knows how ea-ily this is effected ; in any position the pieces may be placed on the board, not more than 18 or 19 moves being required to give mate, In our present issue we publish a simple but useful problem, in which mato way be given in three moves. In <,\n- npxfc we may give one in which, with tv o Raoig, mate may be given in throe mows to the King in the middle of the bawd. The following position occurred xectntly in the finish of a game between two members of the Dunedin Chess Club :— B Kon Qsq., WKcnQ6> W R on QB7, Pan X B 4. White, having first move, declared m-tte in three moves. Another simple problem which we may submit io chess amateur players is :•— BK on QB m W X on Q6, \f R on QKt 7. White! playing first, mates in t« o moves.]
