Discount remains firm. France is importing gold. Business in Stocks restricted. Australian securities are dull. Subscriptions are invited for £400,000 Tasmanian railway certificates, at 70. The price of wool remains unchanged. For flax the market is depressed, and some small parcels have changed hands at £17 to £19. Transactions in corn are limited. The death of Baron Mejer Rothschild is announced.

Berlin, February 7 th. The German Parliament was opened by a speech from the Emperor, in which he expressed his confidence that the efforts now being made by the various powers for the maintenance of peaoe would be successful.

Gladstone's resignation has not been confirmed, but it is inevitable. Five hundred elections have been completed. The ConBervatives gained 75, and the Liberals 27 seats.
