ROADS AT MACRAES.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sin— l have good news to tell you. Tho Eoacl Inspector has paid us a visit after a lapse of about two months, and has no doubt reported to his boss the large amount of work and im- [ provements made by surface men, from here to I Shag Valley ; also the new roads now in course [ of construction near to Macraes, which will coat about £500. Now, Mr Editor, I distinctly tell you j that if the Inspector would condescend to visit I the surface men regularly and see the work they do, it would be his bounden duty to report to I the Engineer that it was only expending Government money by keeping them on the road, as they are no material good. What the carters want is the road to be properly surveyed by the Engineer so as to cut off all pinches, and make it comparatively level. The money expended on. useless surface men would easily do this, and be a great benefit to the carter* as well as — Yours, :&c, I A Bumook Drives. i Macraes, 17th February.

The Lyttelton Times, in referring to the new Woollen Company about to be established in Christchurch, remarks: — "Tha Mosgiel Factory, in Otago, is another instance of successful enterprise in this direction, and those who had an opportunity of inspecting the articles from that establishment which were exhibited in Christchurch last year, will agree with us in thinking that they were in most respects equal to the best goods of the same class imported from the United Kingdom. Indeed, they were considered by competent judges far superior in all the qualities essential to durability, and only a shade inferior in point of finish and design. They comprised samples of tweeds, hosiery and underclothing, blankets, &c, and it will be remembered that the whole of the exhibit was purchased by the Colonial Government for transmission to the Vienna Exhibition as a substantial proof of the Colony 'a progrese."
