WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The regular meeting of this Board was held on the 12th. There were present : Mr J. T. Thomson, Chief Commissioner (in the chair), and Messrs Strode, Bastings, Clark, Eeid, and Butterworth. Messrs Gillies and Street, for Mr Anthony Milligan, applied to purchase about seven acres of bush reserve, being part of section 60, block V., Hawksbury. It was resolved to obtain the Ranger's report upon the application. Mr John F. Herbert applied to purchase as much of the Village Reserve adjoining section 1, block 11., Greenvale, as would enable him to fence clear of the lagoon. A license was granted lum to occupy, under clause 161, at £1 per annum, to enclose only what is absolutely necessary to enable him to fence. The application of Mr William Percival to purchase sections 1 and 2, block VII., and 1, 2, 3, and 4, block VIII. , Blueskin village, was adjourned. Mr D. Findlay applied for a license to occupy the Lighthouse and Customs' Reserve at Waikawa for grazing purposes, under clause 161. The application was refused. Mr A. W. Morris, manager for the Ofcago and Southland Investment Company, protested against the withdrawal from sale of section 18, and part of 16, block VIII., Waipahee. It was resolved that the land be offered for sale, reserving right to survey road through same. Messrs J. and A. Bathgate, for Messrs Durward and Co., Kyeburn, applied for a coal lease of two acres adjoining their present leaseholds. Mr A. Bathgate was directed to obtain the runholder's consent. Mr Robinson, District Land Officer, Naseby, suggested that as he would be absent Borne time on leave, Mr Stratford, who is to do his duty, be appointed to act until h s return. The suggestion wa3 approvod of. The District Land Officer, Clyde, forwarded Messrs Campbell and Low's applica-

tion for their pre-emptive right within the

block set apart for occupation on deferred payments at Ida Valley. The Board decided that Messrs Campbell and Low would require to apply within the area of this run as it was at the date of the application.

Mr G. F. C. Browne protested against Mr A. Bruce mining for lignite on Crown lands in the same locality for which he held a lease. The Board instructed the Ranger to proceed in terms of section 93, Waste Lands Act. 1872.

Mr Mathew Hay was appointed Govern ment Auctioneer for Lawrence district instead of Mr Arbuckle.

Mr R. Capstick was appointed Auctioneer for Tokomairiro district.

It was resolved that Mr Stanbrook be asked if he was prepared to carry on his engagement, and conduct sales in Naseby. Mr Walter Inder wrote offering to conduct sales in that place.

Mr George Cameron applied for a license for the 75 acres north of the railway, and adjoining the Village Reserve in block VII., Waipahee. The application was referred to the Ranger, for his report. Messrs Fletcher and M'Gillivray applied for the lease of about 15 acres of Wyndham Village Reserve, nearly surrounded by a lagoon. The application was refused.

The Wetherstones Progress Committee complained that Mr VVilliam Smith had fenced in a portion of the road through Wetherstones to Gabriels. The matter was referred to the Government.

The District Land Officer, Clyde, transmitted petition of Theodore Russell, under clause 29, to purchase a piece of land occupied by him in Pembroke. The Board had no power in the matter.

The decision to reserve sections 12, 13, and 16, block VII., Glenkenich, now advertised for sale by auction, was reconsidered, and it was resolved that the sale should proceed.

Consideration was made of the application of Messrs Russell, Ritchie, aud Co., for the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, that they might be allowed to have the two pre-emptives for runs 209 and 11 in one block, to include also a part of run 255, which they held under an arrangement with Sir F. D. Bell. It was resolved that the runs be surveyed by applicants, when the respective pre-emptive rights would be granted according to regulations. Messrs Connell and Moodie, for Messrs Crawford and Youngaon, applied to pxirchase five acres of land near Tapanui, for manufacturing timber. The Board directed that a survey be submitted, the land to be then sold by auction as land of special value, having been bo long withheld from sale, aud at an upset price of £3 per acre, with survey fees added.

Mr Farquhar applied for a return of deposit on, Mr Passmore's application. Mr Passmore had applied for 200 acres, under the deferred payments system, and the result of the balloting wag that he got but 10, which he declined to take. Tho officer would not return the deposit without sanction. It was resolved that the Board recommend the Government to return the deposit.

Mr Roberts applied for his pre-Pinptive right on run 213b, and was directed to ftirnish survoy. Mr Bastings moved—" That in future all

pre-emptive, rights be granted strictly in terms of the regulations in regard to frontage. The resolution was agreed to. Mr Almao applied for part of Ocean Beach Reserve, near Anderson's Bay Cemetery. The application was refused. Mr Edmund Hayes applied to object to the sale of section 44, Block VII., Waipahee, to Mr 'Daniel Black. The Board had no power to prevent the sale.
