Tuesday, 11th July. EXPENDITURE OF REVENUE ON THE WAR IN THE NORTH ISLAND.
Mr BAT BG ATE resumed the debato on the motion of Mr Barton :—": — " Ist. That the province of Otago protesta against the further waste of its revenues in Maori wara in the North Island ; and this Council requests the co-operation of the other Middle Island provinces, and especially of our powerful neighbour, Canterbury, to put a stop to it. 2nd. That the Provincial Government, as the representative of the province, ba instructed to enter into communication ( with the Governments of the other Middle Island provinces, to devise with £h,amjthe best'means to carry out bhw^
fully the above resolutions ;" and on which Air Haughton moved an amendment :—" That the words 'in W.iori wars ' in the first resolution be omi asd, , and the words ' on the Maoris' inaertec in lieu thereof." He (Mr Bathgate) concurred in the spirit of these resolutions, which he believed would meet with general acceptance in and out of the l Council. He would be prepared to support the resolutions both in the Council and ehewhere. — (Hear, hear.) Mr REID opposed the amendment, believing that the motion would stand better as it was. After some further discussion, the words " in Maori Wars " were struck out of the original motion. The question < k that the words ' ou the Maoris' be inserted after the word revenues in the motion " was lost, on a division, by 25 to 4. The original motion, with tho words " in Maori wars " omitted, was then carried on the voices.
