Medical. so much danger to the publio, that the attention of medical men and the Government should be at once directed to the question. Launceston Examiner. "We have received from Mr George Robertson, of Melbourne (through Messrs Hudson and Hopwood), a copy of a book just published by him, entitled, " Syphilis : its Nature and Diffusion popularly considered. By James George Beaney, F.K.C.S." Dr. Beaney informs his readers that he entered upon tho task in a philanthropic spirit, and to rescue unfortunate sufferers from the fangs of empirics and impostors. The author describes very fully the Protean phases of this dire malady, and some of its more terrible effects on the skin and viscera are illustrated by fifteen coloured plates from the celebrated work of Bicord and Cullerier. It is beyond our province to criticise Dr. Beaney's labours, but it is gratifying to know that "the time has at last arrived when the leaders in the medical profession have publicly addressed themselves to the consideration of that large class of diseases which have for so long a period been claimed by charlatans and impostors as their favourite field of operation." However acquired, whether from accident or vice, it is a dreadful scourge, and humanity demands the forth-putting of every effort for its amelioration, and this is Dr. Beaney's contribution towards that object. New Zealand Herald [Auckland), March 26th, 1870. We have just received from Melbourne a copy of Dr Beaney's work, entitled, "Syphilis: Its Nature and Diffusion." A handsomely printed, well got up work on the medical subject to which it refers. The Hampden Guardian, May 27th, 1870. Dr. Beaney, of Melbourne, has recently issued from the press " a simple and popular treatise " on what the author describes as "the protean forms of syphilis." The work in question appears, however, to be of a more pretentious character than the author describes it, and contains matter interesting to the professional mind, and at the same time not unintelligible to the layman. The subject matter of the book is hardly of a kind to afford free scope for criticism, except in the pages of a journal exclusively devoted to medical science. Nevertheless, the startling theory advanced by Dr. Beaney in the 12th chapter of his book is worthy of a careful perusal, and more than a passing thought m the community. In this chapter the author asserts his " firm belief that syphilis is in many instances . communicated by means of child's vaccine lymph." Such an astounding assertion ought not to remain unrefuted if false, or prompt legislative measures should be taken to remedy the evil if it is proved to be true. The book contains some few illustrations, which no doubt are valuable to the professional readers, but can hardly do more than point a moral to the nonmedical eye. Pleasant Creek Chronicle, May 27th, 1870. Dr. Beaney, of Collins street, Melbourne, has lately published a medical book on Syphilis, containing the results of a professional experience gathered during many years' practice in various parts of the world, and among a variety of patients in all positions on the social scale. The book is valuable in many respects, and all the more so from the practical manner in which the subject is treated, narrative of individual cases, comment, and practical suggestions being intelligently intermingled.
