GROG SHANTIES.
To the, Editor of tTie Otago Witness. Sib— The gross injustice which the legitimate trader suffers from the present whole, sale sly-grog system is of such alarming proportions that it requires tho most strin* gent measures of the police to eradicate an ; evil, which not only robs the public revenue, but worse, is the prolific source of crime and wretchedness in itsmost debased forms. Itisa , well known fact that almost every street in thecity abounds with, 1 mustsay, disreputable dens of this 'description ; in fact, no later than a few nights ago, the vicinity of Walker otreet presented a scene, of which I am quite surprised the constables on duty have not seemingly taken any notice. In your issue of the 22nd 'nstant, I observed a most interesting article from the able pen of your Travelling Reporter, which T strongly commend to the especial notice of our City Police, as in every particular highly applicable to some of the isolated streets in this city.— l am, &c, Justitia. Walker street, March 23rd.
