TOWN BOARD.

A meeting of this Board was held on Monday. Present- I—Messrs.1 — Messrs. Dick, Lambert, Smith, Dyer, Jeukinson, and Carnegie ; Mr. Kilgour in the chair.

A memorial, signed by 22 proprietors of land in that part of the town behind Dr. Purdie's, was read, requesting that the Board would cause a road to be opened up to that locality, as in its present state it was quite inaccessible for wheeled, vehicles. .1 ■-;

The memorial gave rise to considerable discussion. , Mr. Shepherd, as one of the memorialists, appeared in support of the memorial; t and .impressed upon the Board the necessity of a road being made to that locality,' and stated that he did not think there was another place in the town more inaccessible* for wheeled vehicles. Many who- had purchased land there were now prepared to put i^p Houses, but there were no possible means of getting' caVts up to that part of the town with "timber or other material ; and he therefore trusted that, the Board would favourably consider the grayer of the memorialists. ...

Tn answer to a question, the Clerk stated that it would take the eight surface r ;m'en"sis weeks or so to cut the street line in question, lie thought a passable road could be made for £100:

Mr. Dick considered it a hardship upon those parties v who. had bought land in -that part of the town, and were.anxious to put up dwellings, but were prevented from doing. 30 from their being no, accessible road to , cart up building material . . .As it appeared the surface men could .not .proceed much fu.rth.er with the improvement of the. streef lines in the business part of: the , : town until the proper levels were obtained from, the Government", he thought the men could npt, in the interval, be better employed than opening up a passable road to the locality in question. He .would therefore move— „ „,..,, . , " That until the ievefs of Stafford- street are obtained, the men nov employed there be occupied with the preparing of. streets according* to' the Memorial "now before tlie Board." _• . _

Seconded by, Mr.; Carnegie. Mr. Smith. contended that the J3oard ought to use every effort to open up street lines, and thereby afford everyfacility to parties anxious to build, as it was by "opening up streets and the erecting of buildings that added to 1 the improvement of the town and the value, of property, and from which, the Board would consequently, derive a larger reyeQU^^froux.the-.as-, sessment for 'further improvemwft. ""'He'"' there-" fore was of opinion thaVthe prayer of the memorialists ought to be granted, .and, would support the resolution. . V ... ; . „,\ „;•' Mr.' Lambert said he freely .'admitted, what Mr. Smith had stated, but ujiior.tuuafely there were other localities in the. s,ame positionhaving little or no 'access to them for- wheeled vehicles. The amount of work the Board had already in hand, and- the limited sum at their disposal precluded; them from entering upon any new undertaking, "however anxion.3. titey might be to do it. * fie "moved as an amendment— , ( !i: * ' ' , .*-■,' "I'fiat from 'ttie Urgent nature "of 'the engage, ments to which the Board' is- committed, and the numerous demands upon the fundsat' its disposal iif various directions, the Board cannot at j>Tesent accede to the piayer of the MemoriaK'especklly in the absence of an)' definite information as to the best line of road xo be immediately opened: it p.*' ,;",'*.
