GARDENING CALENDER FOR NOVEMBER.
Vegetables. — Peas and French Beans may still be sown, also Carrots, Parsnips, and Beetroot. Make small sowings of Turnips ahout once a month, as they are liable to run to seed if not used soon after they are fit for pulling. Sow a bed of Swedish Turnips for transplanting after early Potatoes, &c. Cauliflower, if planted now, is not so apt to button as when planted very early. Cauliflower requires rich deep soil, and to be planted with great care, as the least check at planting often proves injurious to their after growth. Red Cabbage for pickling may still bo planted, also Savoys, and both early and late Cabbage. Loosen the soil round Shallots, and carefully hand-ivecd 3'oung ciops, such as Onions, Leel.s, &c. Fruit Treks. — Plnce the tops off the strongest shoots on Apple, Pear, and Plum Trees when iour or five inches long. This early stopping tends to equalize the growth, and to encourage a dwaif habit of growth, which ought (o be aimed at in the tiaining of all fruit trees. Remove huches as they appear below the grafts of recently planted fruit trees. Thin out the young shoots of Raspberries to four or five of the strongest to e.ich t.tool, and destroy suckers between the rows with the hoe or spade. A little short straw or grass laid round Strawberry plants will keep the fruit clean in the event of heavy rains. Fr.owr.KS, S:c. — Dahlias may now be planted out in soil well mixed with h.ilf-decompo&ed manure. Put stakes to Hollyhocks and other tall growing plants. Cuttings of Double Wallflower planted in a shaded spot will root freely now. Annuals or other flower seeds may still be sown on places not exposed to the mid-day sun.
