DuNr.DiN, 10th Jan., 1853. MY DEAR Slß,— Herewith I have the pleasure, on behalf of the Deputation appointed for the purpose, to hand you a Requisition requesting you to become a Candidate for the office of Superintendent of the Province I of Otago. It must be highly gratifying to yourself, as it is satisfactory to your friends, to find that so large a number of the Independent Electors have freely adhibited their names to your Requisition, notwithstanding the efforts which have been made to deter them from so doing. The Requisition contains the signatures of 140 registered Electors, and in addition there are upwards of 30 Electors, many of whom have not had an opportunity of signing — all of whom, however, have pledged themselves to vote for you. The whole number of voters for the Province is 253, of whom upwards of 170 have signed your Requisition, and otherwise pledged themselves to vote for you ; thus placing your election beyond all doubt. Under these circumstances, I have only to express my earnest wish that you will allow yourself to be nominated for this office, which, it is agreed on all hands, you are the only man in the Province competent to fill. I remain, my Dear Sir, Yours faithfully, JAMES MACANDREW. Captain Cargill. Dunedin, 11th Jan., 1853. MY DEAR SIR,— I am favoured with your letter of yesterday, conveying Requisition of Electors, and to which I do myself the pleasure of enclosing my answer, Remaining, my Dear Sir, Yours truly, W. CARGILL. James Macandrew, Esq. TO CAPTAIN CARGILL. Dunebin, Bth Nov., 1852. SIR,— The Constitution for New Zealand having received the Royal Assent, and the appointment of Superintendents for the several Provinces being vested in the Electors, the general interests of the Colony will at once dictate to them the necessity of nominating those men who are possessed, not orly of the greatest capacity for the office, but who also command the greatest public confidence. We, therefore, the Electors of the Province of Otago, feeling that there is no man so entitled to our unlimited respect, as well as to the entire confidence of the people, respectfully
