CHURCH OF OTAGO.

EXPENDITURE. I

At a Congregational Meeting of the First Church of Otago. held on Monday the 2d February 1852, at half-past Six p.m., the Rev. Thomas Burns presiding. Praise and prayer, and reading of Scripture, having been engaged in — the special object of the meeting — that of laying a state of the Funds, and the Annual Accounts to 31st December last, before the Congregation was then stated by the Reverend Moderator, who called upon Captain Cargill to make such introductory remarks as should prepare the meeting for the leading points of consideration in the accounts to be read.

Attention was thereupon called to the meetings of 1 4th and 26th November 1850, for the purpose of considering what should be done in consequence of the sudden retirement of the New Zealand Company, and at which meetings it was unanimously resolved (as published in the first number of the '•' Otago Witness"') that the roofing in and completion of additions to the Church and School buildings should be effected by subscription at a cost of about

£120 ; and with a view to the support of | Church and School, as provided for in the Trust-Deed and relative Institutes, that Collections and Seat-rents should be established, and a Minister's Sustentation Fund organized. In conformity with these resolutions, and by means of a Deacons' Court duly constituted on the 16th January 1851, the buildings referred to had been completed, and other buildings provided for, by subscriptioa. — Church-door collections were introduced on the Bth Decem- | ber 1850 ; Seat-rents on the 7th March 1851 ; and a Sustentation Fund brought into operation on the 19th of November. The progress made on these several heads was now to be shewn in the year's accounts to 31st December last ; and it was to be kept in view, that with the exception of a small amount of rents received by the Trustees, and paid over in part of the minister's stipend, every source of revenue had been originated within the year, and that all of them, except the Church-dooi collections, had existed for only a part of the year. Reference was also made to the reports of the j Trustees and the Deacons' Court of 24th March, as published in the " Otago Witness." No. 5, — I shewing that no funds had come into their hands prior to December 1850. All disbursements for Church and School having ben 1 made by the Company in the way of advances, | and as had been agreed upon, excepting that i some rents had been received by the Trustees, j and were then handed over to the Deacons' ' Court to defray some expenses on the Dunedin Manse, and the balance for aid of the stipend.
