HOCKEY.

MANAWHENUA RETAIN CUP. A fast and interesting game was played on the Otaki. domain on Wednesday when Feiiding challenged Manawliomui lor the Harper Cup. Botli sides were particularly well represented, and as the ground had received special preparation and the day ideal for hockey, it was expected that the spectators would be treated to a match above the ordinary. From the bullyoil' the Blues (Feiiding) attacked and Manawhenua had a few anxious moments. However, the Greens* backs were reliable and the circle was cleared. In turn the latter attacked and before ten minutes of the game had ex-

pired Miss W. Hanson (Manawhenua) beat the opposition and scored a line goal. Manawhenua were again on the defence, due to the splendid play of HHfiUjng) folrwsirijs, but Mrs. Parker cleared In good style. The Blues, however, were not to be denied 'and after a pretty piece of passing Miss Worsfold scored " a great goal, thus equalising scores. The game had been in .progress for -fifteen minutes. The Greens went. VVick; (to attack and Miss .Highli'tdd struck hard from a difficult angle and hit the post. It was a good shot and deserved better success. Another for-

ward rush by the Blues had the Greens oi-i defence but Misses Scott ami Hawea r fared nicely and turned defence into lack. It was then that Mrs. Seal t fared possession and although at an -.JlUkivard angle found the uprights by u well-timed shot. Manawhenua 2,

Feiiding 1. Flay continued very interesting and some pretty play was witnessed. Before the spell ended Miss Budge found the net by a nice shot and placed Manawhenua, 3—l. Tho second half was as equally as fast and exciting as the first but the Manawhenua bucks placed great, hockey ami tno Blues failed to pierce tire tie fence. The Greens, however, found an opening and Miss Hanson scored her second goal, ,[—l, The game ended with no further score. Messrs Amos and Wallace were referees.

, The game, certainly a good one, was noted for its fast play, and had_JFctiding been stronger in the back division play would liavo been even more inter* e-sting. The Blue forwards were a fine set, worked hard .throughout, and more than held their own with Manawhenua, They broke away repeatedly, only to be stopped by the great defensive play of the Green backs who have never played better hockey. The Green forwards were good and put in solid play, frequently breaking through the opposition. For the winners Mrs. Parker, in goal, was reliable, Misses ,Scott and Hawea played well, clearing splendidly on all occasions. Misses Robson (2) and Gardiner were good halves. The forwards were an even lot, all working well. The Feiiding forwards, as stated, were very sound and worked hard, never easing for a moment, but a couple of weak spots in the backs told its tale. With these defects remedied Feiiding should have a team very difficult to beat. After the game the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea. "'* • CURTAIN RAISER. As a curtain-raiser to the above match North v. .South junior teams met, but tho game lacked dash. There -was no dashing- play, gentle tapping of the ball being too much in evidence, play was .not crisp and could have •been brightened up. The game ended : without score. Messrs Ralph and Park-: or were referees.

OTAKI JUNIORS DEFEAT TE HORO. This game, which was hard, fast, and' interesting, was played at To Horo on Wednesday when Otaki emerged victors and thus annex the cup, donated by Messrs Easton, and Nieolsou. This is the first year, the trophy has been played for, and we congratulate the local boys on their success. Bevan, Tlnoka and F. Edwards scored goals for Otaki. while McDonald and Feiiding scored for To Horo. Messrs Spiers and Adsett were referees. After tho game the winners assembled and were warmly congratulated on their success, the little function that followed the match proving most enjoyable. Speeches, suitable for the occasion, were made. A "smoke concert” will probably follow to further celebrate the win. FORFEITS. t The .matches between Manakau and To Horo anti Levin and Otaki were not played, Manakau and ; Otaki forfeiting. * Te Horo have a substantial lead and easily outclass all others for the Shield. Congratulations to Te Horo on their meritorious displays in all matches. MEN’S ASSOCIATION:

A meeting of the Horowhenua Hockey Association was held last Digit 'Present; Messrs H. Nieolson (presiding), K. Spiers, A. Adsett, V. Morgan and B. Knox (secretary). Apologies •were received from Levin and Parajnuaumu members. It was decided that car-owner? who conveyed recent representative players to Wellington be paid for benzine used. It was pointed out that dues to the Association were still owing by Manakau and Levin, and it was decided to ask that these be paid.

The- Hut-t Club, which is anxious to visit Otaki, is to be asked to submit a •date for it match.

A challenge from Victoria College ••was held over as the* Association had too many fixtures in hand at present. It was decided to play Manawala “■&” and "B” at Otaki on a date to ke arranged, and if possible arrange Ike !‘B” game for 2, p.m. -I telegram was received front WelAssociation asking for a game *".*■ “.eancsaay at Wellington.—Decided Mt. Ladies’ Association. It is understood tho main eauso of the abandoning of the trip was the inability to got the best team away and also a shortage of funds. Ruahine has been represented •in the tournament for a number of years having won the K Cup and also jointly held it with -Southland. The absence of the Ruahine representatives is much to be regretted. Tho Wellington team selected to compete at the Dominion tournament is tho soundest combination that has represented the capital city for a considerable time. Of the 15 players selected eight have previous representative honours to their credit, seven of whom hold- tourney experience. With such a formidable attacking line as Misses Hath. Hunt, May Wilkins, Dot Foreman, Jessie Harper and Anne Gleeson and the solid defence of Misses A. Hcfford (goal), Kathleen Miller and Mrs. A. Smith, Wellington can rest assured that her representatives will be .well to tho fore at the tourney. The great ambition of winning the K. Cup appears like being achieved this year. Manawhenua ’s select for the. N.Z. tournament seems to be fairly evenly chosen from both provinces. Although the team may not come up to expectation in the big matches ahead it should considerably beneiit in experience which will go toward lifting the standard of ladies hockey in both districts to a much higher pinnacle. I do not wish 'to infer that the standard of play is not up to the mark —far from it—but we never seem to finish learning more about the game. On the way through to Feiiding last Saturday 1 renewed the acquaintance of several Horowhenua players and was pleased to hear front them the great progress the game is making among the young women of Levin, To Horo, Manakau, Paraparaumu and Otaki.

Wenerei senior B team has been declared winners of its grade. Having played the least number of matches ’Wenerei led: the nearest team to it by | three points, not once having suffered hlcfeatv

The Mental Hospital team, comprising nurses on the staff, is leading- for the junior A competition and look like annexing the championship. Toaj the I’orirua Native team, is running well for the junior B title. The final is to be played between the Natives and ‘.Technical College. Looking through the personnel of the Manawhenua tourney team I agree with the selector in his choice of goalkeeper. Mrs. S. Parker is a wonder in the,, position, her ’keeping being, of a high standard. Another Horowhenua player who has well earned her place is Mrs, Seal.

Miss Anne Gleeson, of Wenerei senior B team, -who has been chosen to go to Invercargill with the Wellington representative team, is one of * the headiest and cleverest handlers of the stick seen in Wellington for quite a time. Last year she played junior for Wesley but was only wasting her time and under the writer’s advice joined St. Peter’s senior team now known as Wenerti. She has achieved her one ambition to represent Wellington at the tournament. Next year will see her advance another step into the top division.. She is no new chum to representative hockey having represented Marlborough and West Coast before resuming hockey in "Wellington. Miss Kath. Hunt, ■ ex-Invercargill tourney representative, is going to be a tower of strength on the wing for Wellington.

_ The writer will be in Otaki for the final of the Rose Bowl on Saturday week. ROTORUA TEAM. We understand that the Rotorua team, which possesses clever dancer.-: and singers, will be invited to stay at Otaki for a dance on their return from the tournament.
