Otautau Athletic Society.

The officials, of the Otautau Athletic Society are to be commended on the success which attended the second annual sports meeting on Wednesday. The public supported the fixture m large numbers, the gate takings being m the vicinity of £50. The tracks were m splendid order, and the racing throughout was of a

very interesting nature, the various events being well contested, and some very close finishes were witnessed. The programme was carried out well to time, and the President, Mr G. Sinclair, the Secretary, Mr R. R. Walker, .and the rest of the officebearers deserve a word of praise for the splendid organisation of the meeting. The starting was m the capable hands of Mr G. Bone, while the bushcraft events were controlled by Messrs M. Dowling, T. O'Byrne and AY. Young, who also officiated as judges, along with Messrs G. Blanks, R. Bird and T. Burns. The following also officiated as Judges : Running, Messrs J. T. Brooker, R, N. Wilson, A. Harrington and A. Lindsay ; Piping, Mr Wm. Gunh ; and {Dancing, Mr J. Murtagh. The principal, event of the day, the 13.0 yds Sheffield, was won by S. Hagerty, Winton, while the 100 yds Maiden and 75yds Handicap were annexed by N. G. Saunders, a noted amateur sprinter of pre-war times. J. Te Au, Tuatapere, accounted for both Chops." The President's Medal for most points m running events went to Len. Malcolm, a promising j'oung performer. It is pleasing to be able to record that the Committee Vil l come out on the right side of tho ledger, and that the meeting will pay its way. A dance was held m the Town Hall m the evening, this function being liberally supported. Excellent music was provided by Mr E. Jellyman, and Mr R. B. CoUett officiated as M.C. Supper was also handed round. The nett proceeds of this entertainment (which- proved a fitting wind-up to the day's proceedings )][was £12.
