RAHOTU.
(Our Own Correspondent.) Things have been very quiet indeed lately. The few fine days we have had are making a great improvement in t.he roads, &c,
The now ranger appointed by the Parihaka Road Board seems to be stirring around a bit. I heard one story of him which runs as follows : He went up a certain bye-road; and saw one settler on the road by his farm. They entered into conversation. Presently out came two or three of the settlers' cattle on to the " long acre." Their owner looked at them and said, " Oh, Well, they can stop there now ; I don't suppose the ranger will be up this way to-day." The Ranger said nothing at the moment; but as they were about to separate he greatly astonished the settler by saying; " Half a minute, I want so aud so (states the charge) from you. ' I am the ranger." Last Friday a practice was to be held by tbe Rahotu Riflo Club; but only two members turned up. Unless a little nrore attention is given to the Club's affairs. I am afraid it will have to " reconstruct." During the winter months the excuses given by members was that the weather was too bad, and so on. Now they are all too busy ; so that they find it inconvenient to get away to practices.
