The Japanese Government insist that the Chinese Ambassador be sent here to discuss the peace proposals. Captain Von Hannekin is organising a Chinese army of 100,000 men, which will be commanded by European officers. London, December 6.
At the auctions good wools remain unchanged. Inferior and faulty sorts are slightly in buyers' favor. Young Saunderson mutilated his victim with a knife in the same way as Jack the Kipper did.
In the event of Russia occupying Port Lazareff, on the eastern coast of Corea, Great Britain will occupy Chusan, on the Chinese coast. France claims a right to Formosa. Reports from Washington state that the Japanese have rejected the proposals for peace. Sir F. Sutherland, at a meeting of the P. and 0. Company, said the lowered value of silver was seriously affecting profits, but there was no cause for discouragement. The business was on a perfectly sound footing, and debentures were held in readiness to meet the requirements of the new mail contract.
New York, December 6. Mr John Burns/M.P., delivering an address to a mass meeting of workmen, said that Whitechapel was clean, wholesome, and even luxurious, compared to the horrible tenements he saw in New York, the effect of the Tammany regime. Sydney, December 7.
Mr Bruce, Chief Inspector of Stock, who recently visited Europe, has presented a lengthy report to Parliament on the frozen meat trade. He very strongly recommends the amalgamatioa of the leading frozen meat companies in Sydney to erect powerful works and perform all other branches of the trade.
Eeplying to a deputation of farmers, urging that the duty on dairy produce should not be removed until the end of next year, tbe Premier said if it was found that the removal of duties in July inflicted any hardship on the farmers, the Government would probably take some steps to remedy the evil.
