AUCKLAND'v. NEW SOUTH WALES. The above match was played at Auckland on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Auckland by 14 to 11. The match between the North Island and New South Wales takes place to-morrow at Auckland. Hughes (of the Waimate Club), who was picked as one of the forwards, could not get away, and Pringle, of Wellington, goes in his stead. OPUNAKE v. RAHOTU. A combined team picked from Opunake and Waimate played the Rahotu Ake Ake team on Saturday at Opunake. The Ake Ake team played with seven emergencies, Opunake won the toss, and decided to play with the sun at their backs and a strong wind in their favor. Rahotu kicked off and took the play into Opunake 25, but the home team worked back to mid-field and a lot of line-out play followed in the visitors’ 25, from which Hohaia secured the ball, and taking advantage of an opening crossed the line, securing first try for Opunake, from which H. Good landed a neat goal. The play was afterwards carried into the home team’s ground, but by some judicious play on the part of the backs H. Good crossed the line, and W. Lamhie placed a goal. After some give and take play Opunake took the ball into close proximity to the blue and blacks’ line, but Simeon relieved his side by kicking up the field. After some passing among the local hacks H. Good again scored, and another goal resulted. The game for a time was centred in mid-field, where the blue and bldfcks had the best of it. By the combined play of A. and H. Good the latter was enabled to score, but no goal resulted. Half-time was shortly afterwards called, with Opunake 18 points, Rahotu nil. In the second spell Rahotu made desperate attempts at scoring, keeping the ball a good deal of the time in their opponents’ 25. The Opunake forwards rushed the play to within a few yards of the visitors’ line, where Forsyth scored near the post, but the kick at goal was unsuccessful.- The visiting forwards got a good rush on, and carried the ball into their opponents’ territory,'when West succeeded in scoring for Rahotu. The kick was unsuccessful. The blue and blacks attacked the Opunake line time after time, but the local backs were too strong for them to get through. From a good run by Callender the ball was taken to the centre, and a pass to A. Good enabled him to score. Another goal was the result. After some serum work and give and take play H. Good again got away and scored, but the try was not converted. Time was called shortly after with the score at— Opunake, 29*points ; Rahotu, 3 points. Rahotu had a better forward team than Opunake and always had the best of the scrums, but were puzzled by the passing tactics of the opposing hacks. Mr W. Good acted as referee amf gave every satisfaction.
