Mr Newton King’s Weekly Report. New Plymouth, August 24. Cattle. —On Friday the 17tb, at Midhurst, I held a clearing sale of Mr Petersen’s dairy. The cows were a nice lot and sold at high prices after keen competition. Backward springers made £4 to £5 10s ; cows at calving, £G to £8 15s. At Stratford, on Tuesday, the yards were very full. There was a good attendance but very few buyers. Young stock and backward springers were dull of sale and most of these classes were passed in. Dairy stock near calving was keenly competed for, and sold at high prices. Small calves made 11s to 28s 6d; yearling, 86s 6d to 455; 18 to 20-month steers, £2 18s to £8 3s; heifers in calf, £8 7s 6d; springers, £4 7s to £6 2s 6d ; springing cows, £4 to £6 17s 6d. Mr Kenigon’s dairy was well competed for, springers making up to £8; late calvers, £3 6s to £5 10s; draught horses, £l9 to £2O. At Oakura, on Wednesday, I held a clearing sale of Captain Mace’s dairy cows. There was steady competition throughout, and prices, though not so high as those ruling in the Stratford district, were fairly satisfactory. Springing cows made £6 5s to £7 10s ; late. calvers, £4 15s to £5 10; springing heifers, £5 7s 6d; fat sheep, 15s Gd; old ewes, 3s 9 ; hack, £B. At Waiwakaiho, on Thursday, the sale was the smallest I have held for some time. Buyers, however, were present in full force, and bidding was brisk from start to finish, nearly everything being sold at the hammer at improved prices. Calves made 22s to 85s; yearlings, 37s to 41s 6d ; 18 to 20-month mixed cattle, £2 19s 6d; springing heifers, £4 12s 6d to £5 17s 6d ; cows, £4 2s 6d to £6 6s; stores, £2 15s to £3 ; fat heifers, £5 ss; fat bullocks, £6 10s. Land.—l have to report the sale of Mr A. J. Croft’s farm at Stratford to Mr George Mumby at a very satisfactory figure. Messrs Hunter and Nolan’s Report. Auckland, August 21. Horses.—The number brought forward has been limited, and the demand slack. We quote—Hacks, from £8 10s to £9 5s ; light harness horses, £4 15s to £lO 10s; medium draught, £7 15s to £l2 ss; heavy draught, £l2 to £l9 10s. Cattle. —Stock has been more plentiful, and a steady demand has prevailed for all descriptions. We quote—Dairy cows, from £3 to to £7 ; dry cows, £2 5s to £3 lls 6d ; calves, £1 to £ll2s 6d; yearlings, £1 15s to £1 18s 6d; grown steers, £4 to £5 2s Gd. The butchers’ pens were fairly filled, and some of prime quality were keenly competed for, prices ranging from £7 to £ll 12s Gd; ox beef from £1 Is to £1 3s per lOOlbs ; cow do., £1; veal calves in demand up to £1 10s each. Some averages of fat steers were—£ll 5s lid, £ll 4s, £ll Is 3d, £9 5s 4d, £9 Is 2d, £8 17s Gd, £8 13s 9d, £8 14s 2d, £8 10s, £7 18s Gd ; cows, £6 15s, £8 16s 6d, £6 6s, £5 12s Gd, £5. Sheep were penned at Newmarket in moderate numbers. Wethers ranged from 12s to 17s 9d each ; ewes, 10s Gd to 15s. Messrs F. R. Jackson and Co.'s Stock Report. Wanganui, August 23. Only a small entry came forward at Waverley. At Waitotara no sheep were penned. Cattle sold fairly well. At St. Hill-street we cleared out all the cattle and the bulk of the sheep. The bidding for heifers was brisk. Pigs were easier, not making last sale’s rates. We quote:— Cattle. —At Waverley—Forward bullocks, £5 2s Gd; young steers, £2 Is ; milch cows, £6 2s Gd. At Waitotara—breeding cows, £3 16s ; steers, £8 18s ; heifers, £2 4s to £2 12s, At St. Hillstreet—Heifers, £3 5s to £5 ; milch cows, £4 to £7 Is; fat cows, £4 5s ; yearlings, £2 7s ; weaners, 20s. Sheep.—At Waverley Store wethers, 10s sd; lambs, 6s Gd; old ewes, 2s Id to 4s Gd. At Wanganui—Wethers, lls Gd ; empty ewes, 7s Id; hoggets, 6s Gd to 8s ; old ewes, 6s. Pigs.—Baconers, 84s to 455; porkers, 17s to 225; smaller sorts, 9s to 12s ; rough stores. 4s. Messrs Nolan, Tonka and Co. s Stock Report. Hawera, August 21. At Opunake, on the 21st inst., there was a good muster of cattle, most of .which were good sorts, and sold freely. At Manaia, on 28rd more than the quantity advertised came forward. Most of the lines were sold at auction or afterwards. We quote— At Opunake.—Calves, 16s to 20s; yearlings, £2 to £2 3s ; 2-year heifers, £2 16s to £3 5s ; 2| to 3-year springers, £4 7s Gd to £5 2s Gd ; store cows, £8 ss; cows and calves, £4. At Manaia,—Weaners, 80s to 325; yearlings, 38s to £2 Is ; 2-year steers, £3 5s to £3 7s Gd ; 3-year bullocks, forward, £4 IGs; 2-year heifers, in calf, £3 to £3 ss; 24-year springers, £3 10s to £4 7s ; 3-year springers, £4 15s to £5 10s ; daiay cows, £6 15s to £7 ; store cows, £3 5s to £3 8s; cows and calves, £3 15s to £4 ss.
