AWATUNA.

(Our Own Correspondent.) A petition has been going round this district the last day or two for presentation to the Hawera County Council. The object of the petition is to try to induce the Council to erect bridges over the Punehu and Mangawhero streams. As both these streams ore often so high (especially in winter) that it is dangerous or impossible to

cross them, it is lobe hoped—in fact, I have very good reason to feel sure—that the Council will grant the settlers’ request ; that is, of course, if settlers only sign. The bridges are proposed to be built out of D.P. moneys. The Awatuna Hall is now erected, and will form quite an imposing feature in the landscape when the bush has been cleared away. Several strangers have visited it. and were shown over by the secretary. The committee are working bard for the opening, which will take place about the middle of the present month, and will be duly advertised. There is a great deal of buthfelling going on round the district just now. Arbor Day was not observed here, settlers being more anxious ,to exterminate the present forest than to start a new one. The Eltham Road is much improved by the blinding laid on it. Now one can ride along this read in the dark without fear of breaking his horse’s neck and his own., The blinding is not, however, yet completed. There will be a meeting to-morrow night to see what can be done about raising a loan to metal the Upper Auroa Road. If you only saw its present state, you would think it needed it. August 3, 1894.
