Prof. Stagpoole's Entertainment.

As will be seen ou reference to our advertising columns Prof. J. J. Stagpoole, champion light-weight athlete of Australia, intends giving one of his popular entertainments in the Town ■Hall on Saturday 14th. ' He is professor at the Hawera gymnasium and his entertainments at various places in the district have been very highly spoken of by the press. He is also a very entertaining lecturer and gives instruction in the science of wrestling, dumbbells, and other athletic exercises, which, in a community such as ours should prove of marked interest as our youth are great enthusiasts.in all such matters. It is very desirable that every encouragement should be given to young man to develop themselves physically as it is productive of health, and well-directed athletic exercises have a tendency to do this. The Hawera Star writes thus of a recent entertainment given by the professor in that town: — There was a very good attendance at Professor J. J. Stagpoole's athletic display on Monday evening, and the exhibitions given were of a scientific description. Some feats of strength were performed by the professor, who also went through very pretty exercises with Indian clubs. Sparring exhibitions were also given by pupils. Some interest was taken in the undertaking of the professor to knock out J. Daisley, a local pugilist, in three rounds, and a good exhibition was anticipated. In the first round, however, Daisley fell, and his shoulder slipped out, but was soon put right again. The contest, however, was at an end, the professor being declared the wiuner.
