UNAUTHORISED BALANCES

The District Engineer for Public Works (Mr G. T. Murray) wrote as ! follows in a letter which came before the Hauraki Plains County Council on Wednesday :— Sir, —Referring to the circular-let-ter from the Hon. Minister of Public Works, relative to the expenditure of grants for road and bridge works and to your reply, I attach hereto a schedule of unauthorised balances on votes for works in your district. This schedule relates only to items the expenditure of which the Department does not propose .to undertake itself. If. you will be good enough to submit proposals for expenditure of these amounts in the usual way, the question of authorisation will receive attention. It is particularly desired that proposals should be submitted for only those works which are regarded as "urgent," and in respect of which arrangements can be made ,tp proceed with the work, directly the authority is issued. In the following list the conditional money is enumerated in parenthesis to distinguish these items from thu free money grants :— Kaihere, £200 ;' Kerepeehi .to-Peka-peka (£ for £) (£500) ; Mangawhara, £350 ; Mangawhara Block reads, £171 ; Miranda to Waitakaruru (£ for £). (£ls). Mprrinsville to Waitakaruru : Kaihere section, £500 : Mahuta section (£2OO, £ for £) £600 (£200) ; Maukoro section (on account £2000), ; Ngarua Stream bridge, £500 ; Patotonga section, £450 ; Tahuna section (£ for £), (£198) ; Waitakaruru section, £500 ; Ngararalu stop-bank road (on account £600, £ for £).' (£300) ; Opani to Turua (on account £1700. of which. £850 is £ for £), £350 (£400) ; Orchard East Road (£ for £), (£500). Paeroa to Turua: Turua section (£ for £), (£250) ; Netherton section (on account £1000, £ for £), (£500) ; Pipirpa to Kopu (£ for £), (£1000) ; Rangiora (West), £100; School Road (on account £1000, £ for £), (£SCO) ; Tahanui to Fisher's (£ for £), (£150)'; Tahuna to Ohinewai (Mangawhara, £ for £), (£1185). Tirbhia t,o Tahuna: Tirohia, .to Piako River, (on account, £1600), ■-£1000 ; Torehapa, £75 ; Toreh,apa to Waipuna Road, £250 ; Turua to Kerepeehi, £83 ; Waikaka Stream bridge, £60; Waitakaruru Stream Road (£1250, £ for £), £114, (£1250); Waiti, '£200 ; Wilson's Road (on account £1500, £ lay £). (£500). The "Council decided to obtain further information about several of the above items. On° the motion of Crs. Death and j_ Harris the engineer was- instructed to proceed with authorised works.
