CAUGHT WITH A RAZOR.

CHARGE AGAINST OLTJ MAN

Charged at the Police Court yesterday with attempting to commit suicide at Hunga Hunga, near Te Aroha, an elderly man named Edward Gibson Gubbins pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt wtih summarily. Constable Leece, who prosecuted, said that defendant had been working for about six weeks on Mr Lockyer's farm at Hunga Hunga cutting scrub, and had been baching with Mr Lockyer on the farm. On the arrival of Mr Lockyer at the farm one morning he saw accused sitting on the bed, Gubbins having a razor in his hand. Blood was on his throat, and Mr Lockyer rushed at him and took the razdr away. The man did not hurt himself much, but for the timely arrival ot Mr Lockyer might have committed the act. He had been drinking heavily of late, and said he did not know he was going to do it. Constable Leece said he thought the man should be looked alter as he seemed to be rather "wanting." The Magistrate ordered accused to come up, for sentencewhen called upon within six month's, and to pay £ 1 9s iod costs. The Magistrate pointed out to Gubbins that he could be sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, but he did not feel disposed to send him to gaol as it seemed to be merely a foolish act. He warned accused that if he did not behave himself he could be punished for this offence as well as anything else he might do.
