SALVATION ARMY.
SELF-DENIAI, WEEK.
The Salvation Army has, as an organisation, given both to the religious and philanthropic worlds many examples of what great things can be done by fixity of purpose and unity of effort, and among them none more striking than its annual week ot prayer and self-denial. We understand the period set apart for this purpose for the present year is from October 14th to 20th, and being in sjme measure acquainted with the good the Army Iras accomplished, we are not backward in commending the appeal to the generosity of our readers. In addition to being a great influence for good in this country, the Army is a huge missionary organisation, operating in no fewer than fifty-six countries and colonies, and preaching the Gospel in thirty-three different languages. From what we can gather, its extensive social scheme for the amelioration of the physical needs of the poor and outcast is being carried on with much success in this and in other lands. Take India, for instance, where its famine and relief operations, savings banks, and co-opera-tive schemes are proving of great blessing, and are exceedingly successful. The resident officer (Captain Doran) together with the local co-workers, is
extremely anxious that the contribution towards the home and foreign missionary and social funds shall be a liberal one, and donations may be handed to either the officer in charge or to the members of the Army.
