WAIHI NOTES.

By"Pendennis."

Wednesday, Sept. 16th. BACHELORS' BALL. The ball given on Friday night las week, in Tanner's Hall by that miserable portion of our population known as bachelors, (miserable because of their single state) was a huge success. Space forbids a detailed description of all thO: fair ladies and their, lovely dresses. it to Tsay that there were some ,60 of the fair sex present and all looked charming. As M.C., Mr Baker kept up his reputation as the best we have got in Waihi. Joe Hemus, in better form than ever, and Walter TyreU, ditto, supplied the music. The Committee had the floor in excellent condition and spared no pains to ensure the enjoyment of everybody. lam glad to say that the larrikin element was successfully kept out of this dance. One rowdy certainly did try to get in on a forged invitation, but he found his match in the Secretary/ Of course there was a bit of a row and it was duly arranged to settle it next day on the convincing ground, but when the. time arrived our rowdy friend [referred to apologise. I hear that expenses for the dance totted up a little higher than receipts, but the Committee didn't mind that. The ladies, are now talking of giving a leap year ball .in return for the one under notice. CRICKET. . A scratch match was played on Saturdad last. About 24 members turned up. Birch's team scored a win from Caple's team by 1 run. The play was naturally a bit weak on both sides, but the rough edges will soon be rubbed off no doubt. OTHER SPORTING ITEMS. The Athletic Club have issued their programme for their meeting on 10th ulto.*, and it is being widely circulated.. - Thornley won the stakes easily enough in his wrestling match with McKay of Coromandel on Saturday last. There was a packed house. Regarding cycling, I find I am in error in saying that Waihi boasts only two bikes at the present time. The number should have been six at leastif not more. . .. SPIRITUALISM IN WAIHI. In yesterday's issueff the " Miner" appears a letter from a gentleman in which a copy is. given of a paragraph supposed or said to be contained in Monday night's "Reefton Guardian," and the writer asks Waihians to explain how he knew about it. He states that the information was hot wired to him. Surely this so-called spiritualist must think Waihians particularly dense. If this par really is in the paper he refers to, he probably arranged for its inserion. At any rate I am cynical and will refuse to believe in spiritualism until its votaries show me some trick that an ordinarily clever conjurer could not perform. A s the spiritualist of Waihi is here with a magnumopus, which he is. about to exhibit, possibly his claim to occult knowledge is an advertising, scheme. The joke of it is that in telling a local man where he (the local man) spent his previous evening, our occult friend made an egregrions blunder! ~ ■•■'••; A MATTER OF FORM." : j Saturday night last was celebrated j by some witty fellows of the Anti-. Good Templars Society, in a truly humorous manner. Two or three forms were stretched across the road in front of the Sterling Hotel, by these accomplished comedians; upon the forms were placed empty beer barrels to punctuate the joke. It is a pity that no accident occurred to complete the joke. As it was, daylight came before any traffic reached the barricade; and no harm was done. When will the larrikins learn sense ? NUPTIALS. To-day the/wedding of Tom Howe and Miss Sibloy takes place at the bride's residence in Bulltown. Rev. Norrie, Presbyterian minister, officiates. ACCIDENT TO A CARPENTER. Mr James Johnston, carpenter, who fell off a scaffolding at the Waihi Co's battery a day or two ago and injured his head and left side is doing well at Nurse Arnabaldi's. . THE GRAND JUNCTION. The yarn goes that some practical joker sent quite a few eager ones along to this mine on Saturday to see the reef they cut. Even the local photographer started out. Those in the know don't expect this reef yet awhile. In about a month'<* time though it will be a caso of striking it at any moment, as by then the crosscut will be started if all goes well.
