BRITISH COAL SUPPLY

Conservative Demand For Inquiry Rejected NZPA Special Correspondent LONDON, Dec. 13. The Conservative demand for an independent inquiry into Britain’s coal supplies was rejected in the House of Commons by 298 votes to 284. All the Liberals refrained from voting. During the debate which preceded the divisions the Fuel Minister, Mr Philip Noel-Baker, announced a fourpoint programme by which the Government hoped to get 22,000 extra miners in 12 months —the number which the mines lost this year. He planned, he said, first, to bring trained Italians into the pits; secondly, managers would try personal persuasion om every man who said he wanted to leave the pits; thirdly, service departments would suspend recruiting in mining areas; fourthly, a vigorous campaign would be started to recruit Irishmen for the mines.
