SCHOOL PATROLS

Certificates Presented

A function in honour of the members of school patrols was held yesterday morning, when proficiency certificates were presented to each member. The senior traffic inspector for schools, Mr Letham, expressed the thanks of the Commissioner of Transport, the Transport Department, and transport officers for the work done by the children during the year. The children had performed their duties with credit, he said. There was a large attendance, including representatives of both the North and South Schools, the North Otago Automobile Association, public transport companies, and the Carriers’ Association. The certificates were presented by the Mayor, Mr M. F. E.. Cooney. " The children have earned high respect from road users by attending to their duties efficiently,” Mr Cooney said. He congratulated the local traffic inspectors for attending to the training of the children. Mr R. E. Dimick said he often felt that a lot of voluntary work was taken for granted, and it was pleasing to see the services rendered by the children acknowledged. "Mr M. Mirfin, representing the Automobile Association, congratulated the traffic inspectors and the children on their work. Others who spoke were Messrs R. S. Duthie (Carriers’ Association), R. S. McNaughton (headmaster, Oamaru South School), F. V. Dennehy (Railway Road Services), and J. Shanks (Oamaru Motor Services). Mr Letham said that every boy and girl could be proud of Oamaru’s record during the year. There had not been a serious road accident involving school children for the past 12 months. Thanks were extended to the North Otago Automobile Association, the Garage Proprietors’ Association, Mrs Lim, Mr F. Lowe, Lanes, Ltd., Thompsons, Ltd., and the Oamaru Ice Cream Company for making the party possible.
