REMARKABLE RECORD
Secondary Education In Dominion
ADDRESS TO HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS
New Zealand over the years had gradually been accepting the right of each child to as much education as was required, the Director of Education, Dr C. E. Beeby, said in his address at the break-up of the Otago Boys’ High School last night. Over 90 per cent, of the children in the country today went on to some kind of secondary education, he said. That was considered a remarkable record elsewhere in view of the fact that only one in three persons in the world had. had any education in the way of reading and writing. Education was a heady substance, and had to be taken slowly until one became used to it, he said. For education. to be suddenly given to every
person in the world, particularly in Asia, where possibly only 20 per cent, of the people were literate, would be more disastrous than all the atomic bombs. For every person it was essential to be taugnt first in the “common core,’’ a small group of subjects regarded as fundamental. In fact, the common core was like a lot of boys, sharing an apple. English was needed for the start. Mr J C. H. Somerville, chairman of the Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors, was in the chair. Others on the platform included the Mayor, Mr L. M. Wright, the rector, Mr 'E. J. Aim, and members of the board, the University, and school teaching staff. Items were presented during the night by the mixed choir, the school in massed singing, the band and the orchestra. ?’he prize list is:— lid.—A. R. Kennedy 1, I. G. Davidson 2. lIIc.—K. J.
