ANNUAL BREAK-UP

King’s High School Ceremony

\DDRESS BY DR A. ROSS

”A Sense of Responsibility ” was the title of an address given by Dr Angus Ross, senior lecturer in history at the University of Otago, at the prize-giving ceremony of King’s High School last night. Dr Ross said it was traditional at Eton for the boys to be fitted to occupy positions of leadership, authority and responsibility, and he was confident that King’s High School was playing its part in training boys in this manner. In an age when there were so many free services and high wages, there was a regrettable tendency among men to want more for doing less. He urged the boys to strive to improve their qualifications for whatever work they were doing, but at the same time to have consideration for the welfare of others. He urged the boys to be proud of their school, its traditions and achievements; to be willing to accept responsibility: to be willing to recognise the needs and rights of individuals with whom they had to deal. Mr J. C. H. Somerville, chairman' of the High Schools’ Board of Governors, who was in the chair, opened the gathering by asking those present to stand for a moment as a mark of respect to the late Mr Peter Fraser.

Others on the platform with Mr Somerville were the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs L. M. Wright, the rector, Mr W. Lang, and members of the staff and Board of Governors. Prizes were presented by Dr Ross, and Mr W. P. Wellington, on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce. Items were given during the night by the school band and the school in mass singing.
