Russia’s First War Debt To Britain

Rec. 11.50 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 7. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Hugh Gaitskell, stated in the House of Commons that the amount owing by Russia in respect of advances made during the 1914-18 war was £568,000.000 on March 31, 1920. Treasury bills held against this debt carried interest at 5 per cent. “The Soviet Union Government denies responsibility for these pre-revolution debts,” added the Chancellor. “The question was raised with them on several occasions in the inter-war period, but no settlement has ever been reached."
