LAVA ENTERS VILLAGE

Sicilian Volcano Active Rec. 8 p.m. CATANIA, Dec. 7. A 30-foot wall of. blazing molten lava surging from snow-tipped Mount Etna, on the north-west coast of Sicily, rolled over the first village houses in its path last night. Officials said that if the volcano continued to erupt three villages will have disappeared by tonight. More than 2000 villagers, desperate and helpless, backed away from the searing heat of the lava to fall repeatedly on their knees praying for a last-minute miracle to save their homes. Lava poured into the village of Renazzo a few hours after 600 inhabitants had evacuated and houses began to catch fire. The lava before entering the village streamed through chestnut groves, apple orchards and vineyards turning the trees into flaming torches.
